In order to keep your home warm in winter (and cool in summer) we need to look at all the elements that are between the inside and outside: walls, floors, roofs and windows & doors. Improving these elements will make your home warmer in winter & cooler in summer. Adding insulation, changing the boiler and more will improve the energy performance (EPC) of your property. This will increase the value of your property and creates a better and healthier home.
When doing improvements to your property, you can also update the layout, create the open space(s) you want. This can often be done without extensions. It will transform your property and the way you live in the house.
Often an extension is needed in order to create the space people want. Depending on where your property is located, neighbouring properties and other factors will determine what application(s) you need for your extension(s). You might be able to convert the Garage, add a single or 2-storey front, side or rear extension or do a loft conversion and extension.
Permitted Development (PD): Most of the time you have PD rights on your property. Sometimes they have been removed (with an art.4 directory).
Prior Notification (PN): This is larger/deeper extension under Permitted Development but with neighbours (attached to your property) consultation.
Planning application: This is for anything that is not PD or PN. Apartments/flats always need a planning application.
